Scholarships for Indian Students in Singapore

MOE Tuition Grant: The most common form of support. The Singapore Ministry of Education covers 50–75% of tuition fees at public universities. In return, you sign a bond to work in a Singapore-based company for 3 years after graduation. This is not a loan — it’s a grant.

ASEAN Scholarships: For students from ASEAN and partner countries. Covers tuition and provides a living allowance.

NUS / NTU Merit Scholarships: Both universities offer scholarships covering full tuition, living allowance, and even airfare for outstanding students. Highly competitive and based on academic merit and leadership.

Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA): Fully funded scholarship for PhD students. Covers tuition, monthly stipend of SGD 2,500–3,000, airfare, and a settling-in allowance.

Corporate Scholarships: Companies like DBS Bank, OCBC, and A*STAR offer scholarships with a work commitment after graduation.

Student’s Pass (Visa) Process

Getting a student visa for Singapore is straightforward compared to many Western countries:

  • Step 1: Receive your admission offer from a Singapore university
  • Step 2: The university will send you instructions to apply through the SOLAR (Student’s Pass Online Application & Registration) system
  • Step 3: Submit your application online with passport details, admission letter, passport photo, and financial proof
  • Step 4: Pay the processing fee (SGD 30)
  • Step 5: Receive your In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter — usually within 2 to 4 weeks
  • Step 6: Travel to Singapore on the IPA letter and complete the Student’s Pass formalities at ICA within 2 weeks of arrival
  • Step 7: Receive your Student’s Pass card — you’re officially a student in Singapore!

Working While Studying in Singapore

During term time: Students at approved institutions (NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD, SIT, polytechnics) can work up to 16 hours per week without needing a separate work permit.

During vacations: You can work full-time during official semester breaks and vacations.

Internships: Course-related internships (called “industrial attachments”) are a core part of many programmes, especially at SMU and SIT. These are fully allowed and often paid.

Common student jobs: Tutoring, campus admin work, retail, F&B, freelance design/writing, and research assistant roles. Average hourly wages range from SGD 8 to SGD 15.

Life in Singapore as an Indian Student

Singapore is one of the easiest countries for Indian students to settle into. About 9% of the population is Indian, and Tamil is one of the four official languages. Little India — a bustling neighbourhood — has Indian restaurants, grocery stores, temples, jewellery shops, and cultural centres. You’ll celebrate Deepavali (Diwali), Pongal, and Thaipusam as public or widely-recognised holidays.

The food scene is amazing. Hawker centres serve affordable meals from SGD 3–5, including Indian, Chinese, Malay, and Western options. Singapore’s MRT (metro) system is one of the best in the world — clean, air-conditioned, and incredibly punctual. The tropical climate (27–33°C year-round) feels familiar to most Indian students, and the city is green, clean, and beautifully maintained.

After Graduation – Career Opportunities

One of Singapore’s biggest advantages is what happens after you graduate:

Post-Study Work: Graduates from local universities can apply for a Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP) to stay and look for jobs. Those with job offers can transition to an Employment Pass or S Pass.

MOE Grant Work Bond: If you received the MOE Tuition Grant, you’ll work in Singapore for 3 years — but this is actually a benefit, not a burden. You gain international work experience and earn a good salary from day one.

Strong job market: Singapore is home to 7,000+ multinational companies. Tech, finance, consulting, healthcare, and engineering roles are in high demand. Average fresh graduate salaries range from SGD 3,500 to SGD 5,500 per month.

Gateway to Asia: Many graduates use Singapore as a springboard for careers across Southeast Asia, Greater China, and beyond.
