Study in Brisbane: Complete Guide for Indian Students 2026
Brisbane offers University of Queensland, QUT and Griffith at lower rents than Sydney or Melbourne. Here are the universities, real costs in INR, and the 2026 student visa steps for Indian students.
Quick Answer
Brisbane is a strong, more affordable alternative to Sydney and Melbourne, home to the University of Queensland (a Group of Eight university), QUT and Griffith University. Master's tuition runs about AUD 43,000–54,000 per year (roughly ₹24.5–31 lakh) and living costs about AUD 1,800–2,600 per month (₹1–1.5 lakh). Indian students need a Subclass 500 student visa, which costs AUD 2,500 from 1 July 2026, and must show at least AUD 29,710 for a year's living costs on top of tuition and travel.

When Indian families think of Australia, they almost always say “Sydney or Melbourne”. In my 20+ years of guiding students abroad, I have seen that reflex cost families lakhs of rupees in rent alone. Brisbane — Queensland’s capital and host city of the 2032 Olympic Games — gives you a Group of Eight university, a sunny climate, a growing job market and noticeably lower living costs.
If you are planning a February or July 2027 intake, this guide will help you decide whether Brisbane fits your goals and budget. For the bigger picture on the country, read my complete guide to studying in Australia.
Why Brisbane Is Worth a Serious Look
Three reasons come up again and again when I compare Brisbane with other Australian cities for my students:
- Quality without the Sydney price tag. The University of Queensland (UQ) sits in the Group of Eight alongside Melbourne, Sydney and ANU, and is consistently ranked among the world’s top 50–60 universities.
- Lower day-to-day costs. Rent is lower, and Queensland’s flat 50-cent fares on buses, trains and ferries are a real saving for students.
- A city that is growing. Olympic-related construction, health, education and technology projects are expanding Brisbane’s economy, which matters when you look for part-time work and graduate jobs.
Top Universities in Brisbane
| University | Known For | Typical Master’s Tuition (per year) | Best Suited To |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Queensland (UQ) | Research, engineering, biotech, business, data science | AUD 45,000–54,000 (₹25.6–30.8 lakh) | Strong academic profiles aiming for research or top employers |
| QUT | Industry-linked IT, design, business, engineering | AUD 43,000–47,000 (₹24.5–26.8 lakh) | Students who want practical, job-focused learning in the city centre |
| Griffith University | Nursing, hospitality, music, IT, criminology | AUD 38,000–44,000 (₹21.7–25 lakh) | Students wanting good value and strong support services |
Fees are indicative for 2026 and change every year. Always check the exact fee on your course page before you budget.
Brisbane vs Sydney vs Melbourne
| Factor | Brisbane | Sydney | Melbourne |
|---|---|---|---|
| Share-house room (per week) | AUD 200–350 | AUD 300–450 | AUD 250–400 |
| Top university | UQ (Group of Eight) | University of Sydney, UNSW | University of Melbourne |
| Public transport | 50-cent flat fares | Higher, distance-based | Higher, zone-based |
| Climate | Warm and sunny year-round | Mild | Cooler, changeable |
| Indian community | Growing, well established | Very large | Very large |
For many of my students, Brisbane works out ₹4–6 lakh cheaper per year than Sydney, almost entirely because of rent.
Cost Breakdown for Indian Students
I use a working rate of about ₹57 per Australian dollar here. Exchange rates move, so keep a 10% buffer in your plan.
| Expense | Monthly (AUD) | Monthly (INR approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Room in a share house | 870–1,520 | ₹50,000–87,000 |
| Groceries and cooking | 430–650 | ₹24,500–37,000 |
| Electricity, gas, internet | 80–150 | ₹4,500–8,500 |
| Mobile plan | 30–50 | ₹1,700–2,800 |
| Public transport (50-cent fares) | 20–40 | ₹1,100–2,300 |
| Personal and miscellaneous | 200–250 | ₹11,400–14,300 |
| Total living cost | 1,800–2,600 | ₹1–1.5 lakh |
One-time and annual costs to add on top:
- Student visa (Subclass 500): AUD 2,500 (about ₹1.43 lakh) from 1 July 2026
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC): roughly AUD 600–750 per year for a single student (₹34,000–43,000)
- Flight from India: ₹45,000–80,000 one way, depending on season
- Rental bond: usually 4 weeks’ rent, paid upfront
A realistic first-year total for a master’s student is ₹37–49 lakh before scholarships. UQ, QUT and Griffith all offer merit awards, usually a tuition reduction of 10–25%. My guide to scholarships for Indian students in Australia lists the main ones.

Admission Requirements
For a coursework master’s at a Brisbane university, you will usually need:
- A relevant bachelor’s degree, typically 60–65% or above from a recognised Indian university (UQ and some QUT courses ask for more)
- IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 (PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT are also accepted; nursing and teaching ask for more)
- A statement of purpose, updated CV and, for some programmes, work experience
- Transcripts and degree certificates
For undergraduate study, Class 12 marks matter most. UQ looks for strong results in the relevant subjects, and some programmes consider SAT or ACT scores as supporting evidence for students from Indian boards.
Step-by-Step: From Application to Arrival
Step 1 — Shortlist (10–12 months before intake). Pick 4–6 courses across UQ, QUT and Griffith. Compare course structure, internship links and fees, not just rankings.
Step 2 — Take IELTS or PTE (8–10 months before). Aim for at least 0.5 bands above the minimum so one weak section does not delay your offer.
Step 3 — Apply (6–9 months before). February intakes usually close between October and December; July intakes between April and May. Apply early — scholarships are often decided with the offer.
Step 4 — Accept your offer and pay the deposit. You will receive a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) once you pay the tuition deposit and buy OSHC.
Step 5 — Prepare your finances. Show at least AUD 29,710 for living costs plus first-year tuition and AUD 2,500 for travel. Funds should have a steady 3–6 month history. Education loans with a sanction letter are accepted.
Step 6 — Apply for your Subclass 500 visa online (3–4 months before). Your Genuine Student answers must clearly explain why this course, why Brisbane and how it fits your career. I cover this in detail in my post on the Genuine Student requirement for 2026.
Step 7 — Book housing and fly. Book temporary accommodation for the first 2–4 weeks and inspect share houses in person before signing a lease.
After Graduation
Brisbane graduates can apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485): up to 2 years for a bachelor’s or coursework master’s, and up to 3 years for a research degree. Recent rule changes have made the fee much higher, so plan for it early. My post on Australia’s post-study work visa changes explains what is different now.
My Honest Advice
Brisbane suits students who want a respected degree, a calmer lifestyle and a budget that does not collapse under rent. It is less suited to someone set on a specific employer based only in Sydney. Choose the course first and the city second, but do not dismiss Brisbane just because your relatives have never heard of it.
