SAT Test Dates 2026-2027 in India: Registration Guide and Strategy

Complete guide to Digital SAT test dates in India for 2026-27, including registration deadlines, city availability, and strategy for Class 11 and Class 12 students targeting US universities.

· Nisha Bajpai

Quick Answer

The Digital SAT has eight test dates for the 2026-27 cycle: August 15, September 12, October 3, and November 7 in 2026, followed by December 5 2026, March 13, May 1, and June 5 2027. Registration opens roughly two months before each date. Class 12 students targeting Fall 2027 admission should ideally sit their first attempt by October 2026 to leave room for a retake.

One of the most common questions I hear from Class 11 and Class 12 families is: “When should we register for the SAT?” It sounds like a simple logistics question, but the answer depends heavily on your grade, your target universities, and how much preparation time you realistically have.

This guide gives you everything you need — dates, deadlines, strategy, and the kind of honest advice I give my own students.

All SAT Test Dates for 2026-2027 (India)

India follows the international SAT schedule. There are no India-specific dates — you register through the same College Board portal as students anywhere outside the US.

Strategy by Grade

If You Are in Class 11

You have more time than you think — and that is a genuine advantage. Here is how I recommend thinking about it:

First attempt: August, September, or October 2026. Take the SAT once before November so you have a real score to work with. Most students are surprised — sometimes pleasantly, sometimes not — and that surprise is useful information. It tells you exactly where to focus your preparation.

Second attempt: November 2026 through March 2027. After your first score, you will know which section needs more work. Prepare specifically for that section over one to three months, then retake. The spring 2027 dates (March, May, June) give you even more time if you want a third attempt before Class 12 begins.

The key advantage of testing in Class 11 is that you are not under application pressure. You can take calculated risks, try different preparation approaches, and arrive at Class 12 with a strong, final score already in hand.

If You Are in Class 12

Your window is narrower. Here is the honest truth:

For Early Action and Early Decision applications (deadlines November 1 or November 15), you need your scores submitted by late October at the latest. That means your last viable test date is October 3, 2026. The College Board typically releases scores about two to three weeks after the test, so an October 3 test gives you scores around October 20-24.

For Regular Decision applications (deadlines January 1 or 15), the November 7 date works. Scores arrive by around November 25-28, which is comfortably before January deadlines.

Do not plan to rely on December 2026 or later dates for your applications. Scores from those sittings typically arrive after most application deadlines have passed. They can serve as a supplementary score if your college accepts late score updates, but they should not be your primary plan.

Superscoring: Why Taking the SAT Twice Makes Sense

Many US universities — including most Ivy League schools, large state universities, and liberal arts colleges — practice superscoring. They take your best Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score from one sitting and your best Math score from another sitting and combine them.

This means a student who scores 680 Reading/Writing and 720 Math in August, then 720 Reading/Writing and 690 Math in November, earns a superscore of 1440 — better than either individual sitting.

If you are within range of a significant score improvement, taking the SAT a second time is almost always worth it. The College Board charges per sitting (currently around USD 60-68 for international students), so factor that into your planning.

Booking Your Test in India

Go to satsuite.collegeboard.org and create a student account if you do not already have one. When registering:

  • Use your passport name exactly as it appears on your passport
  • Select your preferred test date and then browse available test centres
  • Book as soon as registration opens for your chosen date — do not wait

Seats at centres in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai are historically the first to fill, sometimes within the first few days of registration opening. If your preferred centre in those cities is full, check nearby cities or neighbouring test dates.

Your passport is your only accepted ID at the test centre. Make sure it is valid on the day of your test.

If you are planning your SAT strategy and want guidance on preparation resources, timing, or which test score to target based on your specific university list, I am happy to help. A one-hour conversation can save months of guesswork.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does SAT registration open for each test date in India?
Registration typically opens about two months before each test date on satsuite.collegeboard.org. The regular registration deadline falls roughly four weeks before the test, and the late registration deadline is around ten to eleven days before. For the August 15 2026 date, for example, regular registration would close around mid-July and late registration around August 4. Do not wait for the late deadline — test centres in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai fill well before that.
Which cities in India have SAT test centres?
The College Board currently lists test centres in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, and Kolkata. Seats at centres in Delhi and Mumbai fill fastest — sometimes within days of registration opening. If you are in a smaller city, you may need to travel to the nearest listed city. Always register on the first day registration opens and check available centres before selecting a date.
What ID do I need to take the SAT in India?
A valid passport is the required photo ID for international test-takers, including students in India. Your passport must be valid on the day of the test. Aadhaar cards, school IDs, and PAN cards are not accepted. If your passport is expiring soon, renew it before your test date. Your name on the registration must match your passport exactly.
How many times should I take the SAT?
Most students benefit from two attempts. The first attempt gives you a realistic baseline score and experience with test-day conditions. The second attempt, after targeted preparation, typically yields a meaningful improvement. Many US universities superscore — meaning they take your best section scores across all sittings and combine them into a new composite. This makes taking the test twice genuinely advantageous, especially if you performed unevenly across sections.
Should Class 12 students take the SAT in 2026 or 2027?
If you are in Class 12 and applying for Fall 2027 admission, your SAT window is essentially August to November 2026. For Early Action and Early Decision deadlines (typically November 1 or 15), you need scores by October 2026 at the latest. For Regular Decision deadlines (January 1 or 15), November 2026 is your last practical date. Scores from December 2026 onward risk arriving after application deadlines and should only be used as a safety net.
What is a good SAT score for top US universities?
At Ivy League universities and MIT, competitive applicants typically score 1500 or above. The mid-50% range at Harvard and Princeton is 1510-1580. For strong universities like University of Michigan, UC San Diego, and Purdue, 1350-1450 is competitive depending on the programme. For Indian students specifically, a score above 1400 opens up a wide range of strong programmes, and anything above 1500 is genuinely competitive at top-ranked universities.
