· Nisha Bajpai

If you are planning to study abroad, IELTS is probably one of the first hurdles you need to cross. Almost every university in Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland requires an IELTS score as proof of your English proficiency. The good news is that with the right preparation strategy, scoring Band 7 or higher is absolutely achievable — even if English is not your first language. At UniquestPrep, we have helped hundreds of Indian students crack IELTS and move one step closer to their dream universities.

What Is IELTS and Why Does It Matter?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is the world’s most widely accepted English proficiency test for study abroad, accepted by over 11,000 organisations in more than 140 countries. Universities use your IELTS score to assess whether you can handle academic coursework taught in English.

The test has four sections — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — and each section is scored on a band scale of 0 to 9. Your overall band score is the average of all four sections. For study abroad, you need to take the IELTS Academic version (not General Training, which is for immigration and work visas).

IELTS Score Requirements by Country

Different countries and universities have different minimum IELTS requirements. Here is a general guide to help you set your target score:

CountryUndergraduatePostgraduateTop Universities
Canada6.0 — 6.56.5 — 7.07.0+ (UofT, UBC, McGill)
United Kingdom6.0 — 6.56.5 — 7.07.0 — 7.5 (Oxford, Cambridge, LSE)
Australia6.0 — 6.56.5 — 7.07.0+ (Melbourne, ANU, Sydney)
USA6.5 — 7.07.0 — 7.57.0+ (Ivy League, top 50)
Ireland6.0 — 6.56.56.5+ (Trinity, UCD)
New Zealand5.5 — 6.06.56.5+ (Auckland, Otago)

Important: Many universities also have minimum requirements for individual bands. For example, a university might require an overall 7.0 with no band below 6.5. Always check the specific requirements for your target program.

2026 Update: IELTS now offers a One Skill Retake option. If you score well in three sections but fall short in one, you can retake just that one section within 60 days — saving you time and money. This is available for computer-delivered IELTS only.

Section-Wise IELTS Preparation Tips

Each section of IELTS requires a different approach. Here are targeted strategies for each:

Listening (30 min)

Practice with different accents — British, American, Australian, and Indian. Listen to podcasts and BBC news daily. Focus on spelling and plural forms in your answers.

Reading (60 min)

Do not read the entire passage first. Read the questions, then scan the passage for answers. Practice skimming and scanning techniques. Time yourself strictly.

Writing (60 min)

Task 1: Describe graphs and charts in a structured way. Task 2: Write clear opinion or discussion essays. Use paragraphs properly and aim for 250+ words in Task 2.

Speaking (11-14 min)

Speak naturally — do not memorise answers. Expand your responses with reasons and examples. Practice with a partner or record yourself daily to improve fluency.

Your 6-Week IELTS Preparation Plan

If you are starting from a reasonable English level (around Band 5.5 to 6.0), here is a focused 6-week plan to reach Band 7+:

Week 1-2: Foundation

Take a diagnostic test. Build vocabulary. Learn the format of each section. Start daily listening and reading practice.

Week 3-4: Intensive Practice

Focus on weak areas. Practice Writing Tasks 1 and 2 daily. Do timed Reading exercises. Start Speaking practice sessions.

Week 5: Mock Tests

Take 3-4 full mock tests under exam conditions. Review every mistake. Focus on time management and accuracy.

Week 6: Final Review

Revise common mistakes. Do light practice to stay sharp. Rest well before exam day. Review test day procedures.

Pro Tip: The two sections where Indian students lose the most marks are Writing and Speaking. In Writing, the most common issue is not answering the question fully or using memorised phrases. In Speaking, it is lack of fluency and giving one-word answers. Focused practice in these two areas can boost your overall score by 0.5 to 1.0 bands.

Common Mistakes Indian Students Make in IELTS

After coaching hundreds of students, we see the same mistakes again and again. Avoid these to improve your score:

  • Not practising under timed conditions — The IELTS is a timed test. If you always practice without a timer, you will run out of time on exam day.
  • Memorising essays and Speaking answers — Examiners are trained to spot memorised responses. You will lose marks, not gain them.
  • Using big words incorrectly — It is better to use simple words correctly than complex words wrongly. Accuracy matters more than vocabulary range.
  • Ignoring the Listening section — Many students assume Listening is easy and do not practice. But you only hear the audio once — there is no second chance.
  • Not reading instructions carefully — “Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS” means exactly that. Writing three words will cost you marks even if the answer is correct.
  • Skipping the review — After every practice test, spend time understanding why you got questions wrong. This is where real improvement happens.

IELTS vs Other English Tests

Students often ask whether they should take IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE. Here is a quick comparison to help you decide:

IELTS

Most widely accepted globally. Preferred in Canada, UK, Australia, and Ireland. Has a face-to-face Speaking test.

TOEFL

Preferred by many US universities. Entirely computer-based including Speaking. Good for students comfortable with American English.

PTE Academic

Fully computer-based with AI scoring. Fast results (usually 2 days). Accepted by many universities, especially in Australia.

Duolingo English Test

Affordable and can be taken from home. Accepted by a growing number of universities. Good as a backup option.

For most Indian students planning to study in Canada, UK, or Australia, IELTS Academic is the safest choice because it is accepted everywhere and is the most familiar to admissions committees.

Frequently Asked Questions about IELTS Preparation

What IELTS score do I need to study abroad?

Most universities abroad require an overall IELTS band score of 6.0 to 7.0 for undergraduate programs and 6.5 to 7.5 for postgraduate programs. Top universities like Oxford, University of Toronto, and University of Melbourne typically require a minimum of 7.0 overall with no band below 6.5. Requirements vary by university and program, so always check the specific requirements of the universities you are applying to.

How long does it take to prepare for IELTS?

The preparation time depends on your current English level. If you are already comfortable with English, 4 to 6 weeks of focused preparation is usually enough. If you need to improve your fundamentals, 2 to 3 months of consistent practice is recommended. At UniquestPrep, we assess your current level first and create a personalised study plan so you do not waste time on areas you are already strong in.

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training?

IELTS Academic is required for university admissions and professional registration. IELTS General Training is for immigration and work visa purposes. If you are planning to study abroad, you need IELTS Academic. The Listening and Speaking sections are the same for both, but the Reading and Writing sections are different. Academic Reading uses more complex texts, and Academic Writing Task 1 requires you to describe a graph, chart, or diagram.

Can I retake just one section of IELTS?

Yes, from 2024 onwards, IELTS introduced the One Skill Retake option. If you scored well in three sections but fell short in one, you can retake just that one section instead of the entire test. This saves time, money, and stress. The retake must be done within 60 days of your original test. This is available for computer-delivered IELTS only.

Is coaching necessary for IELTS preparation?

While some students can prepare on their own, professional coaching significantly improves your chances of scoring higher, especially in Writing and Speaking. A good coach helps you understand the scoring criteria, provides personalised feedback on your writing and speaking, and gives you strategies for time management. At UniquestPrep, we offer both online and offline IELTS coaching with regular mock tests and individual feedback.

How much does the IELTS exam cost in India?

The IELTS exam fee in India is approximately INR 16,250 for 2025-2026. Starting April 2026, the fee is expected to increase to INR 19,000. The One Skill Retake costs approximately INR 10,500. It is important to register early and prepare well to avoid having to retake the exam multiple times.

What are the biggest mistakes students make in IELTS?

The most common mistakes include not practising under timed conditions, memorising answers for Speaking instead of speaking naturally, using complex vocabulary incorrectly in Writing, not reading the question carefully in Reading, and not practising with different accents for Listening. Another major mistake is focusing only on practice tests without improving weak areas. A structured preparation plan that targets your specific weaknesses is much more effective.
